Currently, the Holy Angels Novitiate of the Society of Saint Pius X contains 16 members: 4 postulants, 7 novices, and 5 professed brothers. Fr. Charles Ward is the Rector of the Novitiate while Fr. Kenneth Dean assumes the role of Novice Master. The Brothers' formation lasts 3 years and includes classes on the vows, the Church's Magisterium, Holy Scripture and spirituality. In addition, there is an apprenticeship for the practical tasks a Brother might assume in his duties of assisting the priests. Prayer and the liturgy are at the heart of a Brother's formation.
Holy Angels Novitiate began as a separate house of formation two years ago; ever since, it has seen wonderful growth. Young men regularly visit the novitiate for a few days to participate in the life of the Brothers. Such a visit is a perfect occasion to discover the beauty of the Brotherhood by simply living the life of the Brothers with them.
A Distinct Vocation
The vocation of a Brother in the Society of Saint Pius X is marked by the three vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience which the Brothers pronounce. While their life revolves around the liturgy and the Holy Mass, they are most valuable as collaborators with the priests.
At the heart of the Brother's vocation is prayer and the interior life. Prayer helps the Brothers to ground themselves in the reality of man's dependence on God. In the recesses of their hearts they start their lifelong journey towards God. During these moments of prayer, man understands the supremacy of God and acknowledges the fragility of man.
Renouncing false illusions and an exaggerated estimation of his own capacity, man becomes receptive to the transforming work of the Holy Ghost, and develops a humble, child-like spirit. Humble and God-fearing, the Brothers are those souls who experience what we read in the book Ecclesiasticus:
The fear of the Lord is honour, and glory, and gladness, and a crown of joy. The fear of the Lord shall delight the heart, and shall give joy, and gladness, and length of days. With him that feareth the Lord, it shall go well in the latter end, and in the day of his death he shall be blessed. The love of God is honourable wisdom." (Eccl. 1: 11-14)
